There’s a reason why New Jersey is known as the Garden State! Although it might not seem like it, New Jersey is home to dozens of lush state parks and trails, many of which are a quick drive from the Gold Coast. So if you’re eager to get outside and have some fun, I have a few spots you won’t want to miss.
Here Are My Favorite State Parks Near the Gold Coast
New Jersey’s shops and restaurants might not be fully open yet, but our state parks are ready for visitors! Here are a few of my favorite picks—just make sure to maintain social distance while you’re there!
Liberty State Park – Jersey City

Travel time from the Gold Coast: 10 minutes
You won’t have to travel far from the Gold Coast to enjoy the great outdoors! Liberty State Park is one of the most gorgeous spots in the entire state—and it’s located right on the Hudson River. Feel free to take in the Manhattan views, stroll on the Liberty Walkway, or check out the park’s various memorial sites.
Palisades Interstate Park – Bergen County

Travel time from the Gold Coast: 40 minutes
The Palisades Interstate Park spans from New Jersey to New York, and it includes more than 100,000 acres of parks and historic sites. Perhaps the most interesting feature you’ll find here is the namesake Palisades, a line of steep cliffs that run along the Hudson. Be sure to hike along the Long Path or the Short Trail for the best views!
Cheesequake State Park – Old Bridge

Travel time from the Gold Coast: 45 minutes
Despite its quirky name, Cheesequake State Park is a unique destination that offers something for every outdoor lover. Here, you’ll discover five trails ideal for biking or hiking, as well as spots for fishing and boating. And if you’re looking for a fun weekend trip, you can even reserve your own private camping spot.
High Point State Park – Sussex

Travel time from the Gold Coast: 1 hour, 30 minutes
This state park is definitely worth the drive, and like its name suggests, it features the highest point in all of New Jersey! High Point State Park showcases stunning hilltop panoramas, as well as a lake ideal for boating, fishing, or swimming. You can also hike up to the High Point Monument, where you can view New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
Washington Rock State Park – Green Brook Township

Travel time from the Gold Coast: 40 minutes
Washington Rock was once a strategic lookout point during the Revolutionary War—but today, it’s transformed into one of New Jersey’s most popular state parks. Visitors can explore the 52-acre site’s various trails and monuments, including the same scenic overlook used by George Washington to monitor troops in the 1770s.
